Allen County, a leader in Kentucky agriculture

Allen county has nearly 1200 farms, comprising 167,000 acres, with over 47,000 acres in crop land.  Approximately 94% of Allen County’s farms are operated by an individual or family. In 2007, Allen County had over 38 million dollars in cash receipts from livestock and crops.  Major farm products are Milk, Beef, Hay, Corn for grain, Wheat for grain, Soybeans, Vegetables, and Orchards.

In Kentucky, Allen County ranks 5th in all cattle & calves, 10th in beef cows, and 10th in Hay Production, 16th in Burley Tobacco, and 38th in milk production.  Exemplifying Allen County Agriculture excellence, Allen County farmers Bart and Sarah Jones, were named Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Outstanding Young Farm Family for 2009. The family produces pure bred swine, Red Angus and Simmental beef cattle, and approximately 120 acres of burley tobacco production.

Supplementing Allen County’s agriculture base is a large contingent of Amish families who have settled in the county and have helped further increase agriculture production levels.
